Over at the Hall of Merit site Brent has done an interesting study of the strength of the 1880s American Association relative to the National League and Players League.  (It’s contained in posts 134 through 136 of a thread on “Estimating League Quality”—if I’ve done the link properly, you should be able to scroll down and see post #134 on top.)
