The 1922 Negro National League Winter Meeting Revisited

Dwayne Isgrig has done some digging around and has found some additional information on the photograph of the 1922 Negro National League winter meeting originally posted here.

1922 Negro National League Winter Meeting

Here is what Dwayne has to say:

“As you noted: Back row, fourth from left is Sam Shepard, part of the St. Louis Stars’ ownership group (who were there fighting with representatives of the old St. Louis Giants for the league’s St. Louis franchise).

“The second man from the left in the back row is the attorney Homer G. Phillips. He served as the attorney for the St Louis Giants and then new owners Sam Shepard and company as they transitioned the team to the St Louis Stars. Phillips was murdered in 1931 in an infamous unsolved case. After his death, the city finally built a state-of-the-art medical facility for blacks. Phillips had fought for such a facility prior to his death. The city then honored Phillips’s legacy by naming the hospital after him.

“In January 1922, Phillips and Shepard worked out a deal with Rube Foster and the League to keep a team in St. Louis after the financial problems that burdened Charlie Mills and his Giants. Rube Foster believed St. Louis was an important city for the League and he wanted to keep a team in St Louis, thus his willingness to work with Shepherd and Philips to keep a team here.

“I am not 100% sure but I believe the next man to the right (in between Phillips and Shepherd) was G.B. Key, who worked with Shepard in the ownership of the Stars.”

Yes, I think it is! Also, back row, second from right is, I believe, George Tate of the Cleveland Tate Stars. I’ll post an update with images of these two.
