Dobie Moore in the Wild West

I’ve written quite a bit about tracking down the death of Kansas City Monarchs shortstop Dobie Moore; here’s something about his life, an anecdote from 1925 I don’t think I’ve seen anyone use yet. It puts at least a little flesh on the factual bones of Moore’s story.

The image at the top of the post is a detail from the cover of a pulp western novel with a Black hero by R. L. Wheeler (published in 1908). What Dobie was reading 17 years later was probably a pulp fiction magazine, perhaps this one (published in August 1925):
