mack park, 1929

Again from Kevin Johnson, a Sanborn map of the Detroit
Stars’ Mack Park in 1929.
Lefthanded power hitters such as Turkey Stearnes and Edgar Wesley flourished in Detroit in the 1920s, and it’s easy to see why, with the
cosy dimensions in right field.

This was a fire insurance map, and it would come in handy
quite soon, as on July 7 of that very year the grandstands burned down before a
doubleheader with the Kansas City Monarchs, injuring a hundred people, causing
a loss of $12,000 to the park’s operator, John Roesink, and destroying a
limousine belonging to the Stars’ manager, Bingo DeMoss.
