It is surprising that there isn’t that much of a visual record of the 1920s Bacharach Giants (at least compared with some of the most famous Negro league teams), considering that they won two pennants and played in a flourishing seaside resort where plenty of money flowed. This team photo of the 1926 Bacharach Giants, winners of the Eastern Colored League pennant, is one of the best examples:

It has floated around on social media for a few years, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone identify all the players. So here goes.
Standing, L to R: Dick Lundy, Country Brown, Roy Roberts, Luther Farrell, Chaney White, Claude Grier, Thomas H. Jackson John B. Dykes, Ambrose Reid, unknown [Hubert Lockhart], Chance Cummings, unknown [Butler].
Seated, L to R: Alonzo Mitchell, Willie Jones, Chano García, Rats Henderson, Oliver Marcell.
There are three different uniforms depicted here: “Bacharach Giants” with no pinstripes (10 players), “B” with pinstripes (3), and “Bacharach” with no pinstripes (1). There are four different caps: one with an “AC” logo (11 instances), one with just an “A” (1), one with only stripes (1), and one plain cap (1, worn by the player-manager Lundy). Seven of the players have both the most common jersey (“Bacharach Giants” with no pinstripes) and most common cap (“AC” logo).
Here are comparisons of the players in this photo with other images, to show the basis of the IDs I’ve made.
UPDATE 5/21/2026: This photo was published in the Atlantic City Press in 1926 with a caption identifying everyone. Appropriate additions and corrections have been made below.
Dick Lundy

Country Brown

Roy Roberts

Luther Farrell

Chaney White

Claude “Red” Grier

I didn’t have a photo of Grier to compare, so originally this ID was by a process of elimination—but his identity was eventually confirmed by his son (sub required).
Thomas H. Jackson John B. Dykes

UPDATE 5/21/2026: Further research reveals this man to be John B. Dykes, treasurer of the Bacharach Giants, and not Thomas Jackson, who was not affiliated with the Bacharachs in 1926. So the above photos are of two different men, Dykes on the left, Jackson on the right.
Ambrose Reid

Gatewood/Lewis/Dallard/Wallace/Hubert Lockhart?
This player (the next one after Ambrose Reid) is a real problem, as none of the possibilities quite seems to fit. There are five Bacharachs players left. One, McKinley “Jack” Wallace, has no known image to compare. Another, Hubert Lockhart, has one very poor quality one. The other three I’ve arranged in order from least to most convincing match in my opinion.
Ernest Gatewood

Joe Lewis

Maurice “Eggie” Dallard

Either Lewis or Dallard seem possible…but I can’t make any kind of ID on this evidence.
UPDATE 5/21/2026: As explained here, this turns out to be Lockhart. And here is a comparison with two other images of Lockhart. It’s not an incredibly useful comparison, given the quality of the other two, but I thought I would stick it in anyway, just to be complete.

Nap “Chance) Cummings

Unknown official Butler
The most obvious candidate would be the team president, Hammond Daniels, but I’m not entirely persuaded this is a match:

UPDATE 5/21/2026: This is a trainer named Butler, no first name known.
Alonzo Mitchell

Willie Jones

Joaquín “Chano” García

Arthur “Rats” Henderson

Oliver Marcell
